BROOKE HOSPITAL FOR ANIMALS

Association of Jersey Charities Number: 239

In 1930, our founder, Mrs Dorothy Brooke, travelled to Egypt's capital, Cairo, where she encountered thousands of ex-cavalry horses being used as beasts of burden on its streets. Many of them had seen service in the First World War…when the conflict ended in 1918 they had been sold by the British Army into a life of hard labour.

Mrs Brooke was tormented by the memory of the pitiful creatures she saw. On her return to England she wrote a letter to the Morning Post – which later became the Daily Telegraph – exposing their plight and appealing for funds to help her save them. The public was so moved they responded with the equivalent today of £20,000 to help end their suffering.

Within three years, Mrs Brooke had set up a committee to help fund the purchase of 5,000 of these tragic animals. Most were old and in the final stages of collapse and had to be humanely destroyed but thanks to this remarkable woman they all ended their lives peacefully with love and dignity.

Our work reaches around 500,000 working horses, donkeys and mules every year.
We work in Egypt, Jordan, India and Pakistan
We are forging new partnerships all the time with other organisations as far afield as Afghanistan, Guatemala, South Africa, and Kenya.
95% (over 500 people) of our staff work ‘in the field' and are nationals of those countries.
We operate 15 clinics and 43 mobile veterinary teams.
Our veterinary treatment is free.
Between six and twenty people might depend upon one working equine animal for their survival.
The Brooke is the first organisation in its field to scientifically measure its work - essential if we are to share solutions with partner organisations.
Around 80% of ailments suffered by working equine animals are caused by owner ignorance and poverty: they are therefore preventable.
Teaching good equine care underpins our work: by working alongside owners we find practical solutions that last.
We train farriers, saddlers and harness-makers, as well as the animal owners themselves.
Brooke methods are simple, inexpensive and can be learned and implemented by local people.
We build water troughs and shade shelters.
We don't prosecute, campaign or get involved in politics.
Animals in work can enjoy companionship and social interaction with people and their own species.
We believe that working animals should be rewarded with consideration, care and relief of suffering.
Teaching kindness to animals is at the heart of what we do.

The Jersey Group

The work of the Brooke is partially funded by a network of 30 supporter groups throughout the UK.
Ours was formed in July 2001 during a visit to the island by Richard Searight, grandson of Dorothy Brooke, the charity's founder.
Fundraising is achieved mainly by attending events staged by other organisations at which we sell home produce and a large selection of gifts. Occasionally we hold our own events, the largest being the annual Musical Soirée held at Samares Manor in July, to which the general public is invited.

Listed below are some of the events we shall be attending this year, 2010.

BUKIT LAWANG CHARITABLE TRUST

Association of Jersey Charities Number: 271

The Bukit Lawang Trust is a Charitable Trust that was established in response to the flood that hit the small village of Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra, Indonesia, in November 2003, wiping out the village and killing at least 300 people.

The primary aim of the Trust was to assist in the rebuilding of Bukit Lawang. We have set up a small health clinic in the area, and employ a doctor, nurse and midwife, and a Trustee oversees the efficient running of the clinic. We have also supplied educational materials to schools and supplied rice to those families still living in temporary accomodation at the bus station.

In response to the Tsunami affecting Ache and North Sumatra and the earthquake affecting Nias and Simeulue, the Trust intends to assist with further projects throughout the region. With Bukit Lawang being our first, we hope similar projects will follow, in other villages like Bukit Lawang, in the area, in need of direct aid in a long term, and constructive process leading to self-dependance .
Mission statement

The purpose of the Bukit Lawang Charitable Trust is to;

Enhance the health, sanitation, shelter and education of the community, to improve the quality of life for people in Bukit Lawang, and the Bohorok region, North Sumatra, Indonesia and such other village communities in South East Asia.

The Bukit Lawang Trust is proud to announce we will be working on a partnership project in 2007 with Jersey Overseas Aid to construct a permanent health clinic in Bukit Lawang with good facilities which the people can be proud of.

CHERNOBYL CHILD LIFE LINE (JERSEY LINK)

The Jersey Link is associated with Chernobyl Child Life Line, a charity registered in the UK. Our aim is primarily to provide holidays and/or recuperation to children affected by radiation following the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor in 1986.
Doctors and scientists are now discovering that many children are not only battling thyroid cancer and leukaemia as a result of the disaster, but now finding they are ingesting so much contamination there is a steep rise in reported cases of intestinal cancers and heart defects. Post mortem examinations on children are revealing that their organs resemble those of 70-year old people rather than young children.
It is estimated that one month with a family here in the Jersey boosts their immune system to such an extent, that it gives them another 2-years on their life expectancy.

The objective of Christians Together in Jersey is to be a visible sign of the churches' commitment to one another by:

3. fostering ways of sharing the Gospel with the community (evangelism);
4. helping churches make a practical response to human needs, and seeking a common mind through shared decision-making, wherever possible, as part of a growing unit(social responsibility);

Until the Association was formed, all diving emergencies had to be transported to a chamber in either Guernsey or the UK by sea or air - methods which were always under threat of delays through bad weather. These delays could mean the difference between total recovery or permanent illness or disability for bends victims. Delay in the onset of treatment for pulmonary barotrauma (burst lung) or embolism can prove fatal.

In 1993, the charity changed it's name to Jersey Hyperbaric Treatment Centre to better reflect the aims and objectives of the charity. In 1998, the chamber was relocated to its current site, an old German bunker on Albert Pier between the RNLI station and the Albert Pier terminal.

The chamber is operated by a team of trained volunteers, led by a volunteer doctor. The team comprises divers, technicians and doctors. All volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, undertaking training and treatments in their own time.

JERSEY SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS (INCORPORATED)

Association of Jersey Charities Number: 87

Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Inc.)

History of the JSPCA:
In 1868 the Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' (JSPCA) was founded and Miss Frances Elizabeth Wilson established the Jersey Animals' Shelter itself in 1913. In 1925 the JSPCA formed a Committee to assist Miss Wilson in her work and in 1936, the JSPCA and Jersey Animals' Shelter amalgamated. This was a lifelong wish of Miss Wilson and took place shortly before her death.

JSPCA Animals' Shelter Services:
The JSPCA Animals' Shelter provides a range of services relating to animal care and welfare, offering help and advice for all members of the public. These services include:

Cruelty/Welfare Investigations
The JSPCA works closely with the Police and the Sates Veterinary Officer in investigating cases of alleged cruelty or mistreatment of animals. Members of the public are able to contact the Shelter for advice should they have any concerns about the welfare of an animal.

Education
Sir Philip Bailhache opened the JSPCA Animals' Shelter Giles Howard Memorial Education Centre on 29th June 1996. It plays a vital role in introducing children to animals and teaching them the importance of caring for and respecting both pets and wildlife. It is widely recognised that education about animal welfare from a young age is imperative to the improvement of attitudes towards the treatment of animals, which, in turn, is fundamentally important in the prevention of cruelty to animals. The Education centre works in close conjunction with the Jersey's schools and has developed a number of carefully crafted workshops that support the curriculum.

Ambulance Service
The JSPCA Animals' Shelter provides an ambulance service whereby members of the public can always telephone for advice or assistance whenever required. Ambulance staff are available to rescue injured animals, collect strays and assist the public in any way and they are thoroughly trained in basic animal first aid, thus providing an invaluable service in ensuring that help is always available for any animal or bird in distress.

Lost and Found Service
The JSPCA Animals' Shelter collects and cares for many of Jersey's stray animals and runs a comprehensive lost and found service. Every effort is made to reunite each stray animal received at the Shelter with its owner as quickly as possible. The JSPCA Animals' Shelter strongly recommends microchipping pets for identification purposes.

Re-homing
Regardless of the reason or circumstances for being unable to keep a pet, the JSPCA Animals' Shelter will take in all unwanted companion animals and endeavour to find them new and loving homes. Every animal is thoroughly health-checked and temperament assessed before being placed in a new home. Most animals are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped (as appropriate for the species) before becoming available for re-homing and all cats are blood tested to establish whether they have been infected with Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Once a prospective new owner has been found, a home check will be carried out to ensure the animal's requirements can be met. The Animals' Shelter has one of the best re-homing records in Britain. The Shelter also runs a Foster Animal; Scheme, which offers free veterinary treatment for life to elderly animals re-homed from the Shelter or to animals the Shelter re-homes with on-going medical conditions, such as Diabetes mellitus.

Boarding
The JSPCA Animals' Shelter has facilities to board both dogs and cats. Both the Kennels and Cattery have recently been rebuilt and designed with maximum comfort and hygiene in mind and with the aim of minimising the risk and spread of disease. Each animal has its own individual kennel with an outside run and boarding dogs are walked on-site on a daily basis. Every day each animal is given a hands-on health check. The Shelter also offers an “Emergency Boarding” service for which a number of kennels are kept available at all times. This service offers boarding facilities for pets belonging to people who may have to go into hospital.

Animal Crematorium
The JSPCA understands and respects the special relationship that develops between people and their pets. On contacting the JSPCA Animals' Shelter, bereaved owners will find a sympathetic ear and can be reassured that their pet will be treated with the utmost dignity and care. The JSPCA Animals' Shelter provides the only Pet Cremation Service on Jersey and owns the Animals' Cemetery at First Tower.

Affiliates:
The JSPCA Affiliation Scheme was developed and introduced in 2001, whereby local animal charities and organisations are invited to “join forces” and work together with the JSPCA to promote animal welfare and ensure that scarce resources are best utilised. The aim of this scheme is to present a united front against animal cruelty and promote all aspects of animal welfare.
