The Ultimate Sacrifice by Paul Saunders

New completely revised and updated edition launched 5 May 2004

During the five years of the Occupation over 500 islanders were sentenced and deported to serve periods in the harsh penal system in occupied Europe.

Inevitably for some, this led to transportation to concentration camps.

The Ultimate Sacrifice was commissioned by the Jersey Heritage Trust and written by Cambridge historian Dr. Paul Saunders.

The book chronicles the fate 22 Jersey men and women who perished through the mistreatment they received in the camps and prisons and whose names are inscribed on the Lighthouse Memorial overlooking St Helier harbour.

The second edition incorporates the information contained in the recently discovered Law Officers files. The book contains a detailed analysis of the actions of the Island authorities in relation to the Jersey 22

The text of the first edition is available as a free download at this website and the second edition is available from Jersey Heritage Trust, The Jersey Museum, The Weighbridge, St Helier, Jersey JE2 3NF
